Step 2: Find a cheaper energy plan.
This information is for Victorian households. If you live in another state, energy plans and how you compare them may be different.
Switching to a cheaper plan is one of the easiest ways to reduce your energy costs.
Same energy, smaller bill.
Even if you switched plans last year, there’s a good chance a cheaper one is available now. Taking a few minutes to compare offers could save you money over the year, without changing how you use energy.
There are two main checks that can help you make sure you’re on the best energy plan for your home:

To get started, check whether you’re already on your company’s best deal – this simple step can often save you money without switching companies.
Prefer help with this? You don’t have to work it out on your own. You’ll find details about the Energy Assistance Program on this page, which offers free, independent help to compare energy plans.
1. Check your bill or ask your energy company for their best offer
Your energy bill tells you if there’s a cheaper plan available for your home. Look for the line that says ‘Could you save money on another plan?’
That’s not marketing – it’s a Victorian Government requirement. Energy companies must show you the cheapest plan based on your actual energy use.

Do this:
» Check every bill for the best offer.
Look for the box that says ‘Could you save money on another plan?’

The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) is the government’s fair price for electricity.
If you don’t want to compare or switch energy plans, you can call your energy company and ask to be put on the Victorian Default Offer.
While it may not be the cheapest plan for your home, the Victorian Default Offer is a fair price, monitored and set each year by the energy regulator.
- The Victorian Default Offer price is the same across all energy companies.
- Once you’re on the Victorian Default Offer, your rate will update yearly until you choose to switch to a different plan.
The Essential Services Commission, the regulator for energy in Victoria, has more information about the Victorian Default Offer.
