Step 2: Find a cheaper energy plan.
Your next big saving could come from switching to a cheaper plan. Same energy, smaller bill – what’s not to like?
Energy prices change often, and even if you switched last year, there’s a good chance a better deal is available now. Taking a few minutes to compare offers could save you a lot over the year, without changing how you use energy.
There are two simple ways to make sure you’re getting the best deal for your home:
- Check your bill or ask your energy company for their best offer
- Compare all energy companies using Victorian Energy Compare
1. Check your bill or ask your energy company for their best offer
Your energy bill tells you if there’s a cheaper plan available for your home. Look for the line that says ‘Could you save money on another plan?’
That’s not marketing – it’s a Victorian Government requirement that makes energy companies responsible for showing you the cheapest plan based on your actual energy use.

It’s likely you’re not on your energy company’s cheapest plan right now – most companies have dozens of different options.
If your bill shows that you could save, call your energy company and ask to be switched to their ‘best offer’.

If comparing plans feels overwhelming, don’t worry. Even if you choose not to switch, there’s a fair-priced plan available to help.
The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) is the government’s fair price for electricity.
If you don’t want to compare or switch energy plans, you can call your energy company and ask to be put on the Victorian Default Offer.
While it may not be the cheapest plan for your home, the Victorian Default Offer is a fair price, monitored and set each year by the energy regulator.
- The Victorian Default Offer price is the same across all energy companies.
- Once you’re on the Victorian Default Offer, your rate will update yearly until you choose to switch to a different plan.
The Essential Services Commission, the regulator for energy in Victoria, has more information about the Victorian Default Offer.
